Glass Tile DIY:

The glass tile installation instructions are similar but not the same as ceramic tile. There are some differences to accommodate the unique qualities of glass tiles.

1. Lay the tiles out in the pattern you want.

2. Apply thinset adhesive (using the flat side of the trowel to apply a uniform layer), to the area you want to tile. Don't apply more thinset than you can tile in 5 minutes.

3. Comb the thinset (with a 3/16" square nothed trowel), at a 45-degree angle. This will ensure a proper thickness of the adhesive.

4. Smooth over the comb marks on the thinset so that the marks don't show through the tiles. Try doing this without changing the depth of the thinset on the tile area.

5. Wipe the each tile clean with a dry cloth.

6. Apply ("back butter"), the back of each tile with a margin trowel.

7. Set each tile in place (give the tile a wiggle), and make sure there are no air pockets in the thinset. You can use spacers to make sure the tiles are set in a uniform pattern.

8. Use a wet saw with a diamond blade to cut glass tiles. A miter gauge holds the tile at the right angle through the cut.

9. Use a rubbing stone to smooth out the edges of the tiles and be carefull of the sharp edges.

Glass Tile Tips:

  • Suggested tile spacing is 1/16” to 1/8 ” apart
  • Use white thin-set for clear tile
  • Don't use "super-bonding thinset"
  • Back-butter clear / translucent tiles with a thin coating of thinset to hide trowel lines and eliminate air pockets in the thinset
  • Allow thinset to cure for 4-5 days or until completely dry before grouting. This is extremely important when preparing a surface for glass tile
  • If the tiles will be exposed to direct sunlight while the thinset is curing, cover them. The heat will let the glass expand faster than the thinset which will cause the glass to crack
  • It is best to use a grout that is compatible with the thinset
  • Allow the grout to dry for at least 36 hours before applying sealer
  • Seal the grout according to the sealant manufacturer’s instructions

Glass Tile Facts

1. Glass tiles can be installed in areas of high heat e.g. around a fireplace. Glass tiles are melted in high temperature kilns and are therefore naturally heat resistant. Grout, however, may degrade when exposed to heat in excess of 100 degrees Celsius.

2. There are several glass tiles suitable for floors, be sure to check if the tile is indicated for the specific use. Small mosaic tiles are generally used because the many grout lines make the tile naturally slip resistant.

3. Use only white, fast-setting, polymer-modified thinset. Do not use mastic to set glass tiles. The mastic around the glass tile edges will dry but the mastic trapped under the tile will stay moist forever. Mastic also re-emulsifies when exposed to moisture.

4. Consult glass tile manufacturers and tile setting adhesive manufacturers for their recommendations regarding specific installation material compatibility.

How Recycled Glass Tiles Are Made:

There are more post-consumer glass than municipalities have a use for. The success of glass recycling programs help with the development of alternate products made from recycled glass. This helps reduce landfill and the need for recycled glass storage.

There are two main processes for firing pure glass recycled glass tile: the smalti and sintered methods.

Smalti method
Crushed glass, called cullet, are melted into a molten state. Color is added and the liquid is then rolled out and cooled. The glass tiles are then cut into individual tiles.

Cast method
Glass cullet is placed in forms or capsules along with color, and then melted until the pieces fuse together. Different molds are put in the press to create different sizes and shapes of the tile.
