Colors and its effects on us
Posted by Charnell on May 17th, 2010psychologists have studied the influence of color on the mind for years. The effects can not be generalized to every society but it’s found that people from the same society are affected by colors in similar ways. The findings make it possible to tap into the subconscious of people and then to use this information when decorating, to create living spaces that will have a positive emotional effects on us.
The subconscious effect of color on us is a hot area of psychological research. Since marketers caught wind of color’s powerful effect, they’ve been using it to hook us on whatever they’re trying to sell. One example is fast food restaurants that use red and yellow in their color scheme to stimulate our appetites and lift our mood. When you’re happy and hungry, you’ll eat more than you really need to (which means more sales for them). Another interesting fact is the type of music they play in the background. It’s purposefully selected to influence us to eat faster, so that we can leave the restaurant faster to make way for the next batch of customers. Yes the music’s got nothing to do with this article but it surely gives us a clear picture of how strong our subconscious react to stimulants around us without us really being aware. Now, marketers would not spend so much time thinking up color placement strategies for their products if they did not know that it actually works.
What color should I make this room?
Keeping the ‘effect-of-color-on-our-subconscious’ in mind, we put together a list of the various colors and the type of room they will suit best. This serves only as a decor guideline. In the end it’s about what you like and love. You have to live in your home after all.
