Color psychology: Decorating with Pink

Posted by Charnell on May 17th, 2010

Pink represents compassion, nurturing and love. It lacks aggression, although the deeper pinks can be more assertive and confident. Pink is the only tint of a primary color with a name of its own. It comes in lots of different hues (bubblegum pink, fuchsia, candy floss, salmon, peach etc) and each hue have their own psychological effects. You can say pink is the opposite of red. Red revs you up and pink tranquilizes you.

Violent and aggressive prisoners have been successfully calmed by placing them in a pink room for a specified amount of time. If they were left in the pink room for too long, it started irritating them again. So pink only offers a short-term calming effect. Too much pink is physically draining and can be somewhat emasculating. People tend to think that pink is predominantly a feminine color and that only women and little girls should live in pink surroundings. That is so far from the truth. There are a lot of women that don’t even like pink and a lot of men that wear pink all the time! Trying to convince your other half that pink is a good color for the bedroom? Maybe the examples below could change his/her mind..

Bedroom: Pink bedrooms can be peaceful and restful. If you’re a couple and your partner thinks pink is too fem for his/her taste, you can still bring it into the bedroom as accent colors. There are so many shades of pink that you can avoid the dreaded “girly” feel of the color pink. Hot fuchsia can introduce a little more passion. We also know that the softer shades of pink can be oh so romantic.

Bathroom: Take a soothing bath in a bathroom decorated with the color of compassion and nurturing after a long and grueling day.

Living room: The pitfall of pink is that it can appear overly feminine very easy (unless that’s your thing then it’s all good). You can balance it out and add strength and sophistication to pink with black, charcoal or dark chocolate brown.

Dining room: Again, it’s better to use it as an accent color. If you want to make a statement with pink (and you will!), go for more vibrant pink shades like hot pink or coral pink.

Kitchen: Pink in the kitchen, remind us of sweets, cakes and candy floss! Pink will definitely give the kitchen a sense of fun. Hot cerise will go great with a bright grass green and white. You can even mix in some orange too.

Office: Softer shades of pink will be a good color for organizations that offers support, comfort and nurturing for people who are in need of it. If you have a couple of hot heads walking around the office, use pink accents in the office to temper those tempers.

How NOT to decorate in Pink: Decorating in a specific color is a delicate business. There is always a possibility of going that step too far. Here is an example of a room that’s a 100 miles over the border of insanity, and is still accelerating..
