Color & the subconscious: the effect of color on us

Posted by Charnell on April 10th, 2010

Research shows that colors have a big influence on people’s psyches. Ever wonder why fast food restaurants seem to like the colors red, yellow and white so much?

Red and yellow stimulate the appetite, making you eat more than you intend to. White always gives the impression of sterility which in turn create the impression that the restaurant (and restaurant kitchen), is perfectly clean and therefore trustworthy to eat at. You rarely, if ever, see a fast food restaurant with a dark color scheme.

Red & Yellow are preferred by fast food restaurants for a reason.

Cool colors like dark blue, dampens the appetite. If you are throwing a dinner party and worry that the food might not be enough, set the table on a dark table cloth. Want to lose a few pounds? Eat your food off a blue plate.

The above pictures are exactly the same (hue, brightness of the picture etc). Which image make you more hungry?

Neutral and softer colors are best suited for childrens bedrooms. Energetic colors over stimulate an already lively toddler and cause restless sleep leaving the child irritable and more hyper than usual. Blue has been proven to reduce pain levels and green promotes healing which is why hospitals predominantly favor these two colors. Red is a good color to use in an office space as it stimulates creativity and energy levels. It should be used in moderation in the office however, or it can become distracting.

As you can see now, colors play a big role in our everyday lives. Used correctly, color and light can improve productivity at the workplace;  increase the safety of industrial facilities,  foster greater attention spans in students, create more appetizing food-service establishments and bolster the spirits of hospital patients.

  5. It is good to find something worth looking at. Seems like everybody is starting a blog and flinging up whatever hops into their head. Usually it does not make good sense. I am pleased to see that is not the case with this one.
