Leaky faucets are a common plumbing problem in many homes. The constant dripping is not only a poor exercise in water conservation but the wasting water will also increase the energy costs in your home over time. Luckily this is not a difficult problem to correct.
There are two types of sink faucets compression or washerless.
Compression faucets: as you turn the faucet handle to open, a valve lifts and water flows through. When you close the handle, the valve closes and stops water from flowing.
Washerless faucets: as you move the handle, the ball, ceramic disk or cartridge lifts, opening a channel to let water through. When the ball sits tight to the faucet body, water flow is stopped.
If you have a leak coming from the handles of the bath tub faucet, you will need the following:
Compression faucet:
A compression faucet is made up of a cap, screw, handle, locknut, stem,
o-ring, seat washer, screw and valve. Assembling the parts in this order,
makes a handle that turns water on and off.
To fix a compression faucet leak, take the whole handle apart. As you go, check each washer, O-ring and screw. If they are worn or rusted, replace them and reassemble the handle.
Make sure the locknuts and screws are tight.
Washerless faucet:
The three types of washerless faucets (ball faucet, ceramic disk faucet, cartridge faucet), are made up out of similar faucet parts and are fixed the same way.
Most washerless faucets are made up of a handle, escutcheon ring or adjusting ring, a cam, cam washer, inlet seal, spring, ball or disc cylinder, and the seat or water inlets.
Take the bath tub faucet handle apart. Replace any worn or rusted faucet parts and reassemble the handle. Make sure the screws are tight.
