Take time to plan your kitchen space

The way we use our "space" has become a characteristic of our times, indeed a theme in its own right. Almost every sphere of modern day engineering, architecture and interior design has focused an inordinate amount of energy on exploiting the advantages of smart space application.

Legroom

Under counter cabinetry is the basis of kitchen storage and tend to provide a continuous solution to stocking the many gadgets, ceramics and utensils that accumulate in a kitchen. This set of cupboards will comprise a collection of simple shelves within, spice rack drawers, large drawers and small drawers and tray cupboards. This compilation is decided upon in consultation with your kitchen company and should suit your lifestyle and its expectations.

Within reach

being able to reach kitchen utensils, condiments, crockery and groceries is very important in a kitchen. The easier the task of retrieving goods, the more enjoyable cooking will be. Careful panning at the construction stage can render these chores simple if thought is put into it. Here are a few pointers:

  • The planning of cabinets should be approached with patience and dedication. Successful space usage and adequate storage is essential for the functioning of the kitchen.
  • The height of your overhead cupboards should be reachable, even if a small stool is needed for the top shelves.
  • Large pot drawers are extremely handy for storing big pots, ovenware and bulky pans. They can even be used for dinner plates, vases, jugs and kitchen processors also locate themselves well in these useful drawers.
  • Lengthy cabinet runs can be interrupted by varying the height of the cupboards or using recessed or protruding areas for storage and interest.
  • Lighting should be planned at the joinery stage so as to include inside-cupboard lighting for display cabinets.
  • Grocery storage should be situated near the food preparation area and preferably allow counter space to place shopping bags when you return from grocery shopping.
  • Plan cupboards with a view to accessories that might be used within them, like drawer liners, bearing in mind their dimensions.

Seeing is believing

If your style is traditional country or simply modern contemporary, you may want to make a feature of utensils and cooking equipment. these may be simply allowed to rest on the countertop or be visible through glass doors, especially manufactured for the purpose. If elegantly placed, they can act as accessories for the cluttered/country/eclectic look. Particularly when the contents are pretty, a glass cupboard can break the monotony of wrap doors or the solid look of wood throughout.

Effective cupboards

The angle and layout of cabinetry is not the only consideration when designing the detail in a kitchen. The color and appearance goes a long way to create an atmosphere in the kitchen. The choice of material should complement your style and set off the many features that reside in a kitchen. Depending on the tupe of kitchen and overall style which you have decide upon, granite can be successfully combined with aluminim doors and solid wood cupboards can enhance stark white Corian. By extending your choice, an interesting and engaging use of different textures can result in a suitable yet eye-catching finish. Long term durability and an attractive appearance are key elements when considering cupboard material and should be valued over price. As with anything, quality comes with a price tag.

Industrial trends

New materials and trends enter the market seeking attention. Many kitchens nowadays incorporate areas that are better off out of sight because they tend to collect cumbersome appliances or much used condiments. These "clutter corners" can be successfully concealed with funky roller shutter doors, a modern-looking and affective shutter that rolls open, leaving the area door- free and easily accessed with one hand. The brushed steel facade is industrial in character, perfect for modern kitchens. The idea is effective for coffee booths and appliance "grages", allowing bulky hand appliances to sit on the surface area within easy access, but out of sight.

Ovehead cupboard space appreciates industrial design and is an area in which much development has taken place. Soft closing flap-up cupboards are cutting edge and allow the user excellent obsevation of the contents as well as eliminating the possibility of head injuries.

Handles

The cherry on the cake when fitting these style elements are the handles you choose. With a varied and exciting range this choice is sure to be one of the most pleasing chores when designing you kitchen. Size and material will depend largely on choice of material for the cupboards. Ornate and heavy handles are best suited to traditional kitchens, whilst hidden or discreet handles enhance a minimalist look and enhance modern themes. Sleek and elongated chrome is consistent with contemporary styling, playing on practicality and sturdy craftsmanship.

By selecting the right handle to augment your choice of bespoke or modern cabinetry you can really pull together a look that is rewarding both in its bauty and in its fuctionality.
